Temporary Portals
Niamh Woollin
"The rockpools of Aotearoa fascinate me. I’m lucky enough to live across from a massive rockpool here in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington. Everyday I get to witness the pool emerge and then disappear. These tiny pockets of hidden underwater worlds are revealed only by the tide, and that tide is controlled by the moon. I try to find the time to wander down to be an observer of the changes. Peering in from the waters edge, my stillness allows me to notice all the movement on the bottom of the pool. A whole hidden ecosystem lives right across from my house. To me, rockpools feel like portals, an opening, where we get a temporary, distorted, glimpse into this otherworldly realm. This footage is taken from summer 2026. "
