Native forest which resides along the outskirts of developing rural suburbs will possibly be destroyed for further housing development. The land here is flourishing with native flora and fauna and although these spaces appear untouched, faint sounds of cars and trucks going by can be heard along with the occasional sounds of construction as new houses get built. Although faint, the sounds almost taunt the land, still preserved for now, but its destruction is edging closer, the inevitability of it all looms over the canopy.

Llenyd, 23 years old, studying an MFA.
My background is mixed coming from a Fijian Indian mother and an English father. I have mostly grown up in the Waikato region, currently situated in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton).

Being of mixed descent, I started to find myself in a situation of self-conflict. As an outsider of Aotearoa I felt as if it was not my place to answer these issues but possibly question the way that these issues could be approached from an outsiders view point and figuring out what these steps meant for an outsider coming in. Having grown up around plants, I started to become interested in native species and how ecosystems work, this interest led me to investigate the areas around where I grew up within the Waikato.
