GOGO
Siah Fina'i

This exhibition celebrates the gogo, or frigate bird, through two timber sculptures crafted from
salvaged rimu and matai. The frigate bird is revered as messengers of the gods and vital
navigational guides for those voyaging at sea. Their presence has inspired navigators to embark
on voyages across the Moana, making them a prominent symbol throughout the Pacific.

Out to Sea captures the gogo’s adventurous spirit, depicted in light blue to represent its
journey across the ocean during the day. This piece embodies the search for belonging and a
home away from home, inviting you to reflect on your own travels and journeys.

In contrast, Back to Land showcases deep shades of blue, symbolising the gogo flying home
over the night sea. These varying tones reflect the sea's different moods, highlighting the
profound connection between the bird and its environment. The gogo’s habit of never
spending the night at sea makes it a symbol of safe return, emphasising the joy and safety of
coming home.
