Through a series of three workshops facilitated by Felixe Laing, Jingcheng Zhao, and Liam Jacobson, we will explore provocations that sit at the point of encounter between artist and curator, across institutional, collective, and self-driven initiatives.

Together, the workshops offer tangible knowledge, skills, and methods for emerging and early-career curators to contextualise and action their learnings within their own practice.

About the workshop facilitators:

Jingcheng Zhao is a curator based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Her current obsession is homemade rēwena bread with a slice of butter. She is currently collaborating on a publication with practitioners in Aotearoa who organise art by creating the conditions for themselves. Jing's recent roles include Kaiwhakamahiri Pirihi Taiwhenua Curatorial Intern at Artspace Aotearoa, curator of the 2024 Window Gallery, archivist at Satellites, and Audience Engagement and Administrative Assistant at Te Tuhi.

Felixe Laing is a Pākehā curator and artsworker based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Her curatorial practice is shaped by the values and practices of hospitality, with a sustained interest in creating conditions for artists to develop ambitious work. She is particularly interested in supporting practices that emerge from and grapple with compelling questions about contemporary life in Aotearoa. Recent projects include the Whakamanu Exchange Residency, cab–sous vide by Abigail Aroha Jensen at The Dowse Art Museum, and leading Chez Derriere at Te Tuhi’s Parnell Project Space. She is Associate Director at Grace, Co-Chair of Samoa House Library and works across communications and audience development at Artspace Aotearoa.

Liam Jacobson (Kāi Tahu) grew up in Manurewa and lives in central Tāmaki Makaurau. Liam's work is predominantly in poetry and writing and has written for a number of galleries around the country to support a range of exhibitions. Liam is the current Te Tuhi curatorial intern, where they facilitate the gallery/project space Puku at Parnell Train Station.

This workshop is limited to 16 participants. Lunch and refreshments provided.
